In 6th grade, because I was desperate for someone to relate to me and validate my interests I told a classmate I couldn't wait for the Emmys that weekend. Her WTF face is burned into my brain for all eternity but hey I was real passionate about Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (I still am.) I was also a teenager who wanted to see The Last King of Scotland because Forest Whitaker had won the Best Actor Oscar. I was also a teenager who wanted to see Frost/Nixon because...reasons? Not sure on that one. That shit really makes me laugh now. Also fun fact I didn't see the latter until literally last year. Michael Sheen is delightful.
The local newspaper (yes I am referencing using a newspaper again dammit it was a different time!) used to have a contest where you fill out an Oscar ballot and could win a year's worth of movie passes. I mailed it in throughout middle and high school. My biggest failure was the year I couldn't choose Best Original Song because I hadn't heard any of them. Or maybe because I didn't want to listen to them on this new-fangled youtube website with dial-up internet, product of satan's asshole. Whatever. I randomly circled one in frustration and had my mom drop it off at the post office. I do not remember what I chose. The VERY next day, while indulging in my favorite morning pastime--jamming to music videos on VH1--"Falling Slowly" from Once came on and 5 seconds in I realized I made a huge fucking mistake not picking it. And then of course it won. And Once ultimately ended up as one of my favorite musicals. I cried when I finally saw it in person because I was so moved and also because I was still salty I got that category wrong approx 8 million years ago. Here is Arthur Darvill destroying me with his version of it.
For years I complained that Sound Editing and Sound Mixing presented as separate categories was nonsensical, especially since they always awarded both to the same damn movie. They finally combined them a few years ago and I felt an indescribable sense of "I told you so" rush through my body. See, validation!
Put on my grave:
Andrew Garfield should have been nominated for The Social Network.
Jennifer Aniston should have been nominated for Cake.
(500) Days of Summer should have been nominated for Best Original Screenplay (my personal favorite category.)
